Hours
Polling places in Virginia are open from 6 am to 7 pm. Please note the closing time is 7 pm, not 8 pm as in many other states. The polls close promptly at 7 pm -- if you are not in line by that exact time, you will not be allowed to vote. If you're voting late in the day (especially if traveling by car or transit), please allow plenty of time to make sure you reach the polling place before 7 pm.
Voter ID
Voters are required by Virginia law to present proof of identification when voting. You must bring a valid form of identification (such as your voter ID card or driver's license) to the polling place. If you do not have one, you will be asked to sign an affidavit, which is subject to criminal penalties for perjury. (See more on voter ID requirements from Arlington County and the State Board of Elections.)
Information at polls
Blank sample ballots are posted at each polling place in every election. In November elections, sample ballots with party endorsements are usually available from campaign workers outside the polling place. Be sure to ask for a Republican sample ballot!
Political stickers, clothing and materials
Virginia law prohibits the display of political campaign materials inside polling places. However, the law was revised in 2009 to allow voters to wear campaign buttons, stickers and clothing items inside the polling place. You may also take printed materials into the polling place with you, such as the Republican sample ballot, or a print-out of this year's GOP candidates.
Voting machines
All polling places in Arlington are equipped with small "WINvote" computers, which provide touch-screen voting. Demonstration units are available at the County Elections Office. The WINvote machines were implemented County-wide in November 2003. (See also:More information on Arlington's WINvote machines.)
Starting in Nov. 2008, Arlington also has optical scan paper ballots available at each polling place. The voter marks his choice on a paper ballot (similar to standardized test), and the results are read by an optical scanner. Those ballots can be processed more quickly than the WINvote machines; and there is a paper record of each vote available, in the event that a recount is needed. Voters may choose either system; and each ballots counts equally, regardless of which voting system is used.
Older and disabled voters
Polling places in Arlington offer curbside voting (in the car) and other services to accommodate voters over age 65 and those with physical disabilities. See more on elderly and disabled voter services.
