Resolution #2005-02:
With strongest condemnation
of Sen. Russ Potts' "independent" candidacy for Governor
Whereas, Senator Russell Potts has served as a Republican in the Virginia State Senate since 1992;
Whereas, Senator Potts has enjoyed the privileges of being a part of the Republican majority in the Senate, including holding the chairmanship of the Senate Education and Health Committee;
Whereas, Senator Potts has been a member of the Winchester City Republican Committee;
Whereas, Senator Potts recently announced his intention to run for Governor as an "independent," foregoing any participation in the primary process where reasonable intra-party differences are worked out;
Whereas, the Winchester City Republican Committee has condemned Senator Potts' actions in the strongest possible terms and has unanimously determined that he shall no longer be recognized as a member of their Committee; and
Whereas, the Winchester City Republican Committee has called on all Republican units to similarly condemn Senator Potts' actions;
Now, therefore, be it resolved that the Arlington County Republican Committee:
Stands with its fellow Republicans in Winchester and condemns Senator Potts for what can only be an attempt to elect a Democrat to the office of Governor; and
Demands that Senator Potts be removed from the Republican Caucus, his Republican chairmanship of the Senate Education and Health Committee, and his committee assignments and seniority.
