Resolution #2005-01:
In support of Jerry Kilgore's
candidacy for Governor of Virginia
Whereas, Jerry Kilgore has served the Republican Party and this Commonwealth admirably as Attorney General, Secretary of Public Safety, and as a state and Federal prosecutor; and
Whereas, Jerry Kilgore has a proven record of winning statewide elections, earning more than 60% of the vote in 2001-- more than any other statewide candidate that year; and
Whereas, Jerry Kilgore has already raised nearly $6 million to fund his campaign for Governor, has put in place an experienced campaign team across the state, and has organized a network of volunteers in every county and city; and
Whereas, Jerry Kilgore has been endorsed by both Virginia Senators, by all 8 Republican Members of Congress, by 83 of 86 Republican and Independent members of the General Assembly, by 80 of 86 members of the Republican State Central Committee, and by 127 of 135 Republican Unit Chairs; and
Whereas, early polls by Mason-Dixon and the Richmond Times-Dispatch show Jerry Kilgore leading Democrat Tim Kaine by 5-9 points; and
Whereas, at this time, any talk of a Republican challenge for the nomination has resulted in little more than press chatter and any serious challenge now would have just over 2 months to raise the necessary funds, gain adequate exposure, and gather required petition signatures; and
Whereas, Democrats nationwide have lined up early and solidly behind Tim Kaine with money and manpower; and
Whereas, Terry McAuliffe and the DNC recently pledged $5 million to Tim Kaine's campaign in an effort to make "a longer-term investment [in Virginia] that could pay off during the midterm elections in 2006 and the next presidential race in 2008" 1;
Now, therefore, be it resolved that the Arlington County Republican Committee:
Announces its support for Jerry Kilgore's candidacy for Governor of Virginia and encourages Arlington Republicans to rally around his candidacy early in our unified effort to defeat Tim Kaine and win back the Governor's mansion.
