Resolution 2001-05: No regional tax Whereas, during the 2001 regular session, the Virginia General Assembly considered proposals to add a new regional sales tax for Northern Virginia; and Whereas, those proposals would have placed taxing and spending authority in a new, non-elected regional authority; and Whereas, the Arlington County Republican Committee voted overwhelmingly in January to oppose such a tax; and Whereas, many legislators from Northern Virginia, including Arlington’s all-Democrat delegation, and other pro-tax interest groups supported the proposal to impose a regional sales tax; and Whereas, that proposal had nearly enough votes to pass the General Asembly; and Whereas, Delegate Dave Albo (R-Fairfax) voted against the regional sales tax, and was widely recognized as providing the critical vote in the narrow defeat of the proposal in the House of Delegates; Now, therefore, the Arlington County Republican Committee resolves: We commend Delegate Albo for remaining true to Republican principles, and for his key role in defeating the misguided regional sales tax bill this year. Considered and adopted by the Arlington County Republican Committee at its monthly meeting on March 22, 2001, in Arlington, Virginia. Return to index of 2001 resolutions |
