May 21, 2002 (web only)Stadium authority selects design finalist
The Virginia Baseball Stadium Authority yesterday selected four design firms to compete for construction of a Major League stadium, most likely in Arlington.
"These firms are the best sports venue designers in America," said Gabe Paul Jr., executive director of the stadium authority. "They provide the authority with a rich base of experience from which to make our final decision."
The finalists are HOK Sport + Venue + Event of Kansas City; HKS of Dallas; CDFN2 of Kansas City; and Robert A.M. Stern Architects of New York in conjunction with L.D. Astorino Companies of Pittsburgh.
The Virginia Baseball Stadium Authority is working to secure a Major League team for Northern Virginia. No site for the stadium has been announced, although the Pentagon City area is believed to be the preferred location. Backers of the bid say a team will have to be obtained before construction of a stadium starts.
A rival group is seeking to land a team for the District of Columbia.
Baseball backers in Northern Virginia have said that a team could come as early as the 2003 season. If that was the case, the team likely would play at Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium in the District until a Northern Virginia stadium could be completed.
"We are confident that given the qualifications and experience of these firms, Virginia's new Major League Baseball stadium will provide the ultimate positive fan experience while it also stands as a unique Virginia landmark for generations to come," Paul said in a statement.
