BATTER UP? The group hoping to land a Major League baseball team in Northern Virginia recently sent a representative to the executive committee of the Arlington County Civic Federation, aiming to get the Federation on board the baseball choo-choo train.

Specifically, the baseball backers don’t want the Civic Federation to approve a letter that could be sent to baseball commissioner Bud Selig, opposing locating and baseball stadium in Arlington.

One person who attended the meeting – no fan of an Arlington site for a stadium – called the presentation “evasive.”

The Civic Federation was scheduled to take up the letter at its meeting this week. We’ll keep you posted.

If we were the betting sort, our money would still be on the likelihood that a team and its stadium will wind up in downtown Washington, not far from the MCI Center.

But if the Northern Virginia group wins out, odds are it will be built in Arlington rather than any other locality. Forget about a recent newspaper article suggesting that the baseball folks are interested in sites other than Arlington – it was pure spin. They have zeroed in on Arlington.
