News statement:

On the fifth anniversary
of terrorist attacks on America

September 11, 2001, was a painful reminder that American vigilance abroad must never waver. Today, five years after the horrible attacks by foreign killers who swore allegiance to a religion but twisted its true meaning, the United States is stronger and more secure than ever before. And we the American people are unwavering in our vigilance, our spirit and love of country.

Arlington County felt a special pain that day from the loss of loved ones on American Flight 77 and the 125 American service members at the Pentagon. Arlington's brave first responders met the challenge amidst the chaos, with assistance from neighboring jurisdictions. As the fires raged into the night, our local emergency responders helped to save lives and preserve the very center of our nation's defense. They deserve our eternal respect and gratitude.

Sadly, just one month after the terrorist attacks, one elected Arlington official chose to make a political statement, criticizing the Department of Defense for not inviting him to a memorial ceremony, even going so far as threatening to withhold Arlington's emergency services from future emergencies at the Pentagon. Our police and fire officials swiftly and properly disavowed those thoughtless remarks, demonstrating once again that, no matter the cost or danger, Arlington's first responders are prepared to serve and protect us all, and that partisan politics has no place in responding to emergencies and saving lives.

The attacks of September 11 brought unprecedented challenges to our country, calling for new approaches to defeat lawless terrorists and protect American liberty. President Bush responded boldly and decisively in the aftermath of those attacks, and he has demonstrated the courage and determination in leading the fight against global terror.

Today, America is stronger and better prepared to address the new challenges of the 21st century. Much remains to be done, but we have made great progress in strengthening our homeland security, and in transforming our military forces to deal with new threats.

Under the President's leadership, our nation has destroyed or disrupted major parts of the global terrorist network. America led international efforts to liberate two countries from the shackles of repressive dictatorships that were sworn enemies of America and freedom, and which enslaved their own people. Those struggles are not yet concluded, but the successful outcome will help to transform terrorist havens into new beacons of liberty and democracy in the Middle East. We salute the great service and sacrifice of our armed forces in those distant lands.

Republicans here in Arlington join with citizens throughout America and across the political spectrum in remembering the victims and heroes of September 11, and in rededicating ourselves to victory against the forces of terror.
