Arlington Republicans tap
Lockhart as new Chairman

The Arlington County Republican Committee elected Bill Lockhart as its new chairman last Thursday (March 10), as the party launched plans for the 2005 elections.

Lockhart was elected unanimously to succeed Scott Tate, who stepped down from the position in January.

"I welcome the opportunity to help build a more competitive Republican Party organization here in Arlington," said Lockhart. "We're going to focus on strengthening our precinct organization, fundraising capability, candidate recruitment and community outreach, so we can expand our base of support."

Lockhart called on more Republicans to take an active role in the local party. "Many Arlingtonians share our party's principles, and more than 30,000 Arlingtonians voted Republican last November," he noted. "We will encourage more of them to stay involved, as we expand our party's role in the civic and political culture of Arlington."

The new party chief said the Arlington GOP would continue to speak out for greater fiscal responsibility in County government. "In a time of skyrocketing real estate assessments, Arlingtonians are overtaxed more and more each year," he stated. "Our one-party government in Arlington has not been responsive to the concerns of taxpayers and neighborhoods. It's time to communicate that message loud and clear."

Lockhart also emphasized that the County Republican Committee would continue to be an inclusive organization "in the proud tradition of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. The party welcomes members and volunteers from all backgrounds and every neighborhood within the County," he said.

Lockhart is the Director of Political Systems for Synnovative Consulting, a national firm based in Alexandria. A graduate of George Mason University, Lockhart served as Virginia field director for the College National Republican Committee, and also managed the Steve Sass for Delegate campaign in Arlington's 48th District in late 2003. A native of Pennsylvania, Lockhart now lives in the Columbia Forest neighborhood of South Arlington.
