News release:

Scott Tate elected
Arlington GOP chair

Arlington Republicans have selected Scott Tate as chairman of the County Republican Committee for 2004-06.

Tate, a small business owner and Arlington political activist, was elected unanimously at the local GOP's February 26 meeting. The party also elected more than 100 members of the County Committee for the 2004-06 term, and nearly 300 delegates to the 8th District Republican Convention in May.

Since none of the local party offices were contested this year, the Committee also cancelled the Arlington Republican canvass election that had been scheduled for March 13.

Tate said the party is united in its desire to help re-elect President George W. Bush this fall, and to replace scandal-tainted Congressman Jim Moran. The new chairman also vowed to continue progress toward building a strong, competitive Republican organization in Arlington.

Tate also announced that the party:

  • welcomes new volunteers for this year's elections;
  • encourages Arlington residents to attend the County Board's tax rate hearing on March 25; and
  • solicits prospective candidates for County Board and School Board this year.
    The deadline for candidates seeking the local GOP nomination or endorsement for County office is Tuesday, April 12 (see details).

Tate is co-owner of a small business in Arlington specializing in Internet services. He is a former member of the Arlington County Planning Commission, and former candidate for Congress (2002) and Arlington County Board (2000). He resides in the Bluemont neighborhood, along with his wife Mary, and children Stephanie, Maggie and James.
