Arlington Republicans
pick nominees for 2003

Arlington County Republicans selected three nominees for county and state legislative offices at a party canvass last night (Tues., May 13).

The winners of the canvass, who will go on the election ballot this November, are:

  • Rich Kelsey for County Board
  • Kamal Nawash for State Senate, 31st District
  • Steve Sass for State Delegate, 48th District

The 48th District nomination was contested, with Sass scoring a narrow victory over Tim Russo.

The nominees were selected by Republican voters at an evening canvass election, held at the Lyon Park Community Center. Voters also enjoyed an outdoor cook-out at the event featuring burgers and kabobs, furnished by the Nawash campaign.

Kelsey is a commercial litigation attorney and resides with his family in the Rock Spring neighborhood of North Arlington. He will be running county-wide for one of the two County Board seats on the ballot this year.

Nawash is a civil rights attorney and resides in the Skyline neighborhood of Fairfax County. The 31st Senate District includes Arlington County (north of Columbia Pike), the city of Falls Church, and part of Fairfax County (from Skyline to Seven Corners).

Sass is a defense consultant and former Naval flight officer. He and his family live in the Arlington Ridge neighborhood of South Arlington. The 48th Delegate District includes much of North Arlington (generally north of I-66), plus Rosslyn, Crystal City, and Pentagon City.

Arlington GOP Chairman David Avella said the three nominees provide a strong foundation for the the 2003 campaign, and he added the party may select more candidates in the coming weeks. He also noted that the Alexandria Republican Party would supervise the selection of GOP nominees for two legislative seats covering parts of Arlington - the 30th Senate District and 45th Delegate District.
