Arlington GOP backs Clancy
in special for County Board

Arlington Republicans have picked Mike Clancy as their nominee for County Board in the special election scheduled for March 11.

Clancy was the unanimous choice by canvass vote taken at the County Republican Committee's monthly meeting on Thursday, January 23, after other potential candidates had withdrawn from the race in Clancy's favor. That vote took the place of a separate canvass election, which had been scheduled for Saturday, January 25, in Lyon Park.

The motion to nominate Clancy by acclamation was supported by former County Board member Mike Lane, who won a special election in 1999, and by Arlington community leaders Scott Tate, John Antonelli and Jim Pebley.

In accepting the nomination, Clancy pledged to break the current one-party monopoly in County government and to provide a new voice for taxpayers, neighborhoods and public safety and the future of Arlington. He pledged to make Abraham Lincoln's vision of government "for the people" a reality for all Arlingtonians.

County Republican Chairman Elise Kenderian said the local GOP is energized and united behind Clancy, and predicted a successful effort to restore two-party representation on the County Board. Arlington Democrats are scheduled to select their candidate on Tuesday, February 4.

The special election is being held to fill the seat left vacant by the death of County Board Chairman Charles Monroe on January 11. The election will be held on Tuesday, March 11, at regular polling places throughout Arlington.
