Arlington Republicans
set schedule for special election
The Arlington County Republican Committee today announced the schedule for selecting a candidate in the March 11 special election for County Board.
Key steps in the GOP selection process are:
- Filing deadline: Thurs., Jan. 23, at 12 noon
- Committee meeting: Thurs., Jan. 23, at 7:30 pm
- Canvass election: Sat., Jan. 25, 12 - 4 pm
Any candidate who seeks the Republican nomination or endorsement must submit a statement of candidacy and filing fee to the County GOP headquarters at 405 S. Glebe Rd. by noon on Thurs., Jan. 23. The filing form is available at the headquarters office and online (www.ArlingtonGOP.org).
The Arlington County Republican Committee's regular monthly meeting will be held that evening, providing a forum for all candidates to outline their campaigns. The meeting is in the 1st floor conference room of the NRECA Center, 4301 Wilson Blvd., near the Ballston Metrorail station. The ACRC meeting is open to the public.
Republicans will select their candidate at a "canvass" election, to be held on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 25, at the Lyon Park Community Center, 414 N. Fillmore St. The canvass is open to any registered Arlington voter who is in accord with the principles of the Republican Party. (The date, time and location of the canvass may change, if warranted by the number of candidates who file.)
County GOP Chairman Elise Kenderian said the party encourages qualified Arlingtonians to consider running on the Republican ticket in this and future elections, and other types of campaign participation. "We welcome new people from all backgrounds and all areas of the County, who share our commitment to responsive, two-party government in Arlington," she said.
Kenderian also invited interested residents to participate in the GOP candidate selection process, by attending the Jan. 23 meeting and voting in the Jan. 25 canvass election.
The court-ordered date for the special election is Tuesday, March 11. Voting will be conducted from 6 am to 7 pm that day at all regular polling places throughout the County. The special election is being held to fill the seat left vacant by the death of County Board Chairman Charles Monroe on January 11.
