Arlington County government

Arlington's local government is headed by a five-member County Board. Unlike most Virginia counties (which elect Board members by district, in the same election), Arlington elects Board members at-large, on a staggered basis, all to 4-year terms:

• Barbara Favola (D) - term expires in '08
• Jay Fisette (D) - term expires in '09
• Chris Zimmerman (D) - term expires in '10
• Walter Tejada (D) - term expires in '11
• Mary Hynes (D) - term expires in '11

The County also has five elected constitutional officers, all elected to 4-year terms (except for the Clerk):

• Sheriff - Beth Arthur (D)
• Treasurer - Frank O'Leary (D)
• Commissioner of Revenue - Ingrid Morroy (D)
• Commonwealth's Attorney+ - Dick Trodden (D)
  [+ Jointly elected by Arlington and Falls Church]
• Clerk of Court++ - Paul Ferguson (D)
  [++ Jointly elected by Arlington and Falls Church; 8-year term]

Election cycle: County Board elections are held each November, with 2 members elected in odd-numbered non-gubernatorial years. (Next election: Nov. 4, 2008, for one seat - see Campaign 2008.) Constitutional offices are elected in odd-numbered non-gubernatorial years. (Next election: Nov. 2011.)

Arlington public schools

Arlington's public school system is headed by a five-member School Board. The electoral system is similar to the County Board -- voters elect School Board members at-large, on a staggered basis, all to 4-year terms:

• Libby Garvey (D*) - term expires in '08
• Frank Wilson (D*) - term expires in '08
• Ed Fendley (D*) - term expires in '09
• Sally Baird (D*) - term expires in '10
• Abby Raphael (D*) - term expires in '11

* - School Board elections are officially non-partisan, but candidates frequently run with endorsements from political parties.

Election cycle: School Board elections are held each November, with 2 members elected in presidential years. (Next election: Nov. 4, 2008, for two seats - see Campaign 2008.)

Arlington in the Virginia General Assembly

House of Delegates:
State Delegates are elected to 2-year terms. Arlington includes all or part of 4 House districts (see House district map):

• 45^th - David Englin (D)
• 47^th - Al Eisenberg (D)
• 48^th - Bob Brink (D)
• 49^th - Adam Ebbin (D)

Election cycle: in November of odd-numbered years. (Next election: Nov. 2009.)

State Senators are elected for 4-year terms. Arlington includes parts of two Senate districts (see Senate district map):

• 31^st - Mary Margaret Whipple (D)
