UPDATE: More than 275 local Republicans signed up during the 2012 filing period. Charles Hokanson filed for chairman, and was elected without opposition. Nearly 100 have joined the County Committee for 2012-14 -- but there are more positions available on the Committee, and we encourage interested Republicans to apply for election (see more information). Other filing results: over 250 will serve as delegates to the 8th District Convention in May, and 120 as delegates to the State Convention in June. NOTE: Arlington Republicans will separately nominate candidates for public office this year - including President, U.S. Senate, Congress and County Board. See Campaign 2012. Party offices: In early 2012, Arlington Republicans will elect a County Chairman and Committee members for the next two years. We'll also select delegates to the 8th Congressional District GOP convention in May (which elects district-level party officers) and delegates to the Virginia Republican State Convention in June (which elects Statewide party officers). There are many positions available for Arlington Republicans, and ACRC encourages all interested party members to participate.
Any registered voter in Arlington, who is in accord with the principles of the Republican Party, may file for any or all of the following positions: County offices: These include County Chairman, members of the County Committee, and delegates to the 8th District and State Conventions. Candidates for Chairman must submit a letter of intent and the filing fee by Tue., Feb. 21. Candidates for other County-level positions must submit the Arlington filing form (along with applicable fees) by Wed., Feb. 22. County canvass: If the number of people filing for any position exceeds the number fo slots available, a party canvass (open to all Republican voters in Arlington) will be held on Sat., Mar. 10 to elect those positions. If the number filing for any position does not exceed the number of slots, those persons will be elected auotmatically, and no canvass will be held for that position. (The rules for filing and the canvass were adopted by the County Committee on Jan. 25, 2012.) District offices: These include 8th District Chairman, members of the State Central Committee, delegates and alternates to the Republican National Convention, and a Presidential elector. Candidates for these positions must submit a letter of intent to the 8th District Committee (along with the applicable filing fee) by Fri., Feb. 24. District Convention: The District-level offices will be elected at the 8th District Republican Convention on Sat., May 12, at Bishop O'Connell High School in Arlington (see location details). The Convention will also hear from GOP candidates for Congress. Arlington is authorized to send up to 490 delegates (98 votes), about 30% of the total convention vote. Alexandria, Falls Church and Fairfax County will also be represented. See more information on the District Convention. (The rules for filing and the District Convention were adopted by the 8th District Committee in Dec. 2011.) NOTE: Only those who sign up for the 8th District Convention by the Arlington filing deadline (Feb. 22) are eligible to be voting delegates at the District Convention on May 12.
State offices: These include State Chairman, members of the National Committee, delegates and alternates to the Republican National Convention, and Presidential electors. Candidates for these positions must submit the appropriate form to RPV by Mon., May 14. State Convention: The State-level offices will be elected at the Republican State Convention on Sat., June 16, at the Greater Richmond Convention Center (see location details). The Convention will also hear from GOP officials and candidates. Arlington is authorized to send up to 985 delegates (197 votes), about 2% of the total convention vote. All ciites and counties in Virginia will be represented. See more information on the State Convention. NOTE: Only those who sign up for the State Convention by the Arlington filing deadline (Feb. 22) are eligible to be voting delegates at the State Convention on June 16.
