The 49th House District includes most of South Arlington (including areas south of Columbia Pike); plus the communities from Baileys Crossroads to Seven Corners in Fairfax County.

No Republican candidate filed for the GOP nomination in 2011. This was an open seat, as Del. Adam Ebbin (D) did not seek re-election (he ran for the State Senate).
