Campaign 2008

Arlington voters will be voting for President, U.S. Senate, Congress and county offices in 2008. The general election will be Tuesday, November 4. Absentee voting begins on September 22.

Arlington Republicans are proud to support our GOP ticket for 2008:

  • For President: John McCain and Vice President: Sarah Palin
  • For U.S. Senate: Jim Gilmore
  • For Congress: Mark Ellmore

We also encourage voters to vote "NO" on the referendum for a County housing authority. There are also local races and bond referendum issues on the ballot. See our sample ballot for this year's election.

Earlier this year, Arlnigton Republicans selected party officers for the County Committee (in Feb. and April), and participated in the 8th District and State Republican Conventions (in May).

For President of the U.S.

McCain logoArlington Republicans are excited to support our historic GOP national reform ticket for 2008: Sen. John McCain for President and Gov. Sarah Palin.

Virginia is a key state, and every McCain vote here is important to carrying the Commonwealth this November. Read more about the campaign, and learn what you can do to help McCain-Palin in Arlington.

For U.S. Senate

Gilmore logoCongratulations to former Gov. Jim Gilmore, who won the GOP nomination for U.S. Senate on May 31 at the Republican State Convention. Gilmore will face Democat ex-Gov. Mark Warner in the fall. He's running to succeed the retiring John Warner (R), who has represented Virginia in the Senate since 1978. For County Board and School Board

Arlington voters will elect three local offices in 2008:

  • County Board - one member
    Incumbent: Barbara Favola (D)
  • School Board - two members
Incumbents: Libby Garvey (D), Frank Wilson (D)

Arlington Republicans will nominate a candidate for County Board by early summer. The filing deadline for candidates is Fri, May 9; and a canvass election (if required) would be held Sat., June 7. Prospective candidates are invited to contact us.

Parties do not nominate candidates for School Board, although they often make endorsements.

For Republican Party offices

County: In late February, Arlington Republicans elected members of the County Committee for 2008-10, and delegates to the District and State GOP Conventions (to be held in May). County Republicans elected a new County Chairman at a party canvass in late April. See more on party elections and canvass.

District: The 8th Congressional District GOP Convention on May 17 elected district party offices and delegates to the Republican National Convention. More than 200 Arlington Republicans signed up for the District Convention by the local filing deadline (in late February). Read more about the 8th District Convention.

State: The Virginia State GOP Convention was held May 30-31, in Richmond. That convention elected state party offices, more delegates to the National Convention, and selected our nominee for U.S. Senate. Over 170 Arlington Republicans signed up for the State Convention by the Arlington filing deadline in late February. Read more about the State Convention.

Volunteers welcome! While the Arlington filing deadline has passed, there are still open positions on the County Committee, and many opportunities to help build the party and assist our candidates in 2008. Just fill out our volunteer form.
