For Immediate Release
Since 2006, the Arlington GOP has voiced concerns with the Columbia Pike Streetcar project. These concerns were not based on politics - our opposition was based on the conviction that The Pike deserves a better transportation plan than a streetcar that costs too much for too little benefits.
We are proud of our opposition to the streetcar. It was in the Arlington tradition of community engagement and efforts to make sure that local government spending decisions reflect the most responsible use of tax dollars – which in this instance is Bus Rapid Transit instead of a streetcar.
We want to thank all those who have worked so hard to make sure that the communities’ concerns with the streetcar were heard and ultimately won the policy debate.
We are proud to stand with County Board Members John Vihstadt and Libby Garvey, fellow civic groups, civic leaders, and voters across Arlington in making sure that we have a county board that makes decisions on the basis of building consensus and embracing inclusiveness and diversity of opinion on this issue and other critical issues facing Arlington.
The Arlington GOP calls on all residents, regardless of their ideological vision, to continue to participate in the civic engagement process on all the challenges facing our community. We all must continue to promote a consensus to ensure Arlington remains one of the best places to live in the Nation.
